Buying Pre-Owned Ophthalmic Equipment: A Checklist for Practitioners

Purchasing pre-owned equipment for your ophthalmic practice is a smart way to stay within your budget while still providing exceptional patient care.

Whether you are replacing an existing device or looking for a cost-effective way to outfit your new practice, investing in used or refurbished equipment and accessories can provide the same benefits at a fraction of the cost—and often with similar financing options and manufacturer warranties. Plus, the reimbursement and tax advantages are the same.

However, not all pre-owned equipment (or equipment retailers) are created equal.

Just as you would when shopping for a pre-owned vehicle, make sure you check the following important boxes before you choose a seller and make a purchase.

  • Do your research. As with any significant financial business transaction, make sure you have all of the pertinent information before you make a decision, starting with knowing exactly what you are buying and who you are buying it from. Spend some time online comparing ophthalmic equipment distributors, reading customer reviews, and researching what they offer—as well as their shipping information and return policy. Also look to see if the warranty or return policy information is readily available.
  • Choose a reputable vendor with an established history of success. Make sure their representatives are knowledgeable about the products they offer and can answer any questions you may have about how to use them. Do they provide documentation as to the condition of the device, its serial number and manufacture date, and whether or not it meets manufacturer specifications? Do they have a relationship with the manufacturer? Do they offer easily accessible service and support if necessary?
  • Consider what you really need. Confirm that the equipment you want to buy is compatible with the other equipment in your office. If so, it then comes down to how quickly you need it and how much you want to spend. For example, do you need to immediately replace a piece of broken equipment but lack room in your budget to buy new? In this case, buying a used or refurbished version is often your best option.
