I bought my first autorefractor around 1976. It was about the size of a Volkswagon and cost about $30,000. After we had it about a month my partner said "what in the hell did we buy that monster for? It's not nearly as accurate as my $90 retinoscope"! And it wasn't, but it did have patient appeal. That old wiz bang affect.
Over the years the autorefractors became much better and smaller but really not better then the old retinoscope....just faster and your tech could do it.
But this Huvitz Autorefractor/Abberometer is certainly better than the old retinoscope. It is remarkably accurate. For the most part as long as the eye is healthy it is bang on. Some refinement is necessary but very little. The cylinder and axis are usually right on the mark.
It saves so much time you can see more patients each day or devote more time to other aspects of your examination. Combined with the Huvitz Digital Refractor, it makes practicing optometry an absolute joy.
I can't imagine practicing optometry without this system.

Gone are the days of scribbling a drawing onto a yellow lined piece of paper to explain some ones condition. I was surprised at the level of ease in setting up patients, taking the photos and videos and retrieving their data. I now can explain ocular conditions so much more thoroughly by using photos and videos of the patients own eye immediately after the slit lamp exam. The slit lamp itself has been smooth, easy to use and has created a tremendous "wow" factor in the exam room. The controls are easy to learn, easy to use and has sped my exam up. I am a strong believer in utilizing technology to enhance the optometric experience for both my patients and myself. As a Huvitz Digital Refractor user for many years, I was excited to find a compatible chart system as a substitute for my traditional projected chart. The HDC-7000 uses a standard LCD 19' (or larger) monitor with a minimum resolution of 1280 x1024. The monitor I purchased is rated for 40,000 hours (let's see a bulb last that long)! A review of the Huvitz Visual Acuity HDC-7000 System If your practice is anything like mine, your projector bulb never burns out when it's convenient. Typically it happens in the middle of a refraction. As my projector aged I found myself changing lamps more and more frequently and working my way up to where it was mounted also became more of a chore.
My new acuity system works in concert with my Digital Refractor's key pad so I didn't have to learn new lines of acuity and operates so smoothly I can't believe it's running in a hard wired environment using a standard 50' VGA cable that cost a mere $16.00. Set up took a total of 20 minutes and could not have been easier; especially with the help of a Veatch technician. Would I recommend the Huvitz HDC-7000? Absolutely!
