 The Heine OMEGA 180 features a wide range of innovative features, including HEINE's patented One-Step Small and Variable Pupil Control (U.S. Patent #4,684,227). Stereopsis is maximized in all pupil sizes down to 1.2mm. Heine's unique Diffuser aperture absorbs only 30% of the illumination, making learning BIO easier, and simplifying difficult examinations. A newly incorporated yellow filter for light sensitive patients, along with cobalt blue and red-free filters for all exam situations. The Omega 180 features the highest quality in BIO construction: an aluminum frame for mounting the highest quality German optics, aluminum cylinders and precision "indexed" stops for all aperture and filter controls. These extraordinary Omega 180 features are built into Heine's 100% dustproof housing.

A Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscope functions by projecting three elements - a light source, right eye observation path, and left eye observation path - simultaneously through the pupil. This illuminates the fundus and allows you to see the retina with both observation paths at the same time. This permits stereopsis or 3-dimensional vision. The variable, but exact, positioning of these three elements is critical to the performance of the BIO. It is Heine's precise, patented, synchronization of illumination and observation paths in the Omega 180 that provides true small pupil performance with stereopsis. Because patients have varying pupil sizes, the single easy-to-use Variable Pupil Control positions the observation paths and light source perfectly for each pupil size. The result: you get optimum viewing clarity and performance every time you use a Heine Omega BIO.

A simple ophthalmoscope is defined as an ophthalmic instrument used for examining the retina and other interior parts of the eye. It is made up for a mirror that reflects light into the eye and a hole or eyepiece which then allows an ophthalmic professional to examine the eye with the bright light illuminating any potential problems.
 
A binocular indirect ophthalmoscope takes this type of examination to a new level by projecting three, rather than one, elements through the pupil of the eye. The three elements are made up of the light source, a right eye observation path and a left eye observation path and by using multiple elements and the newest technology, ophthalmic professionals are able to get three dimensional views of the retina and the fundus of the eye.
 
You can find binocular indirect ophthalmoscopes with varying features and at varying prices; some of these ophthalmoscopes are specifically designed as teaching aids and offer simultaneous viewing to students while being used by teachers and some binocular indirect ophthalmoscopes are actually wireless to allow for maximum flexibility.
